Spanish Ladies (minor-key “Yankee whalermen” version)
~ Song
Annotation
There are several version of the song “Spanish Ladies”—or rather, several families of versions (as sea chanteys can vary widely).
This version is the one about “Yankee whalermen,” as oposed to “British sailors,” “Newfoundlanders,” or “Queensland drovers.” It is sometimes the same as as “Talcahuano Girls.” It is also the one with a minor-key melody, as opposed to the major-key versions with the same words. (The major-key melody is also found with “true Newfoundlanders,” but almost never with “true British sailors.”)
