First staged in 1956, Candide would undergo a number of changes over the course of several productions until 1989, resulting in numerous permutations in the sequence as well as song titles. The original 1956 libretto written by Lillian Hellman was replaced by Hugh Wheeler's version in 1974. In addition, no less than six lyricists, including Bernstein himself, were involved over the years. And in 1989, Bernstein presented his final revised version with a yet again revised libretto, written by satirist John Wells.
