Annotation

The Hits features not the actual hits but versions of the hits -- the same re-recordings that have popped up on releases from other labels (such as St. Clair and Allegro) with no connection to Teddy Pendergrass' original releases. Nothing on the packaging of this release indicates the nature of the recordings, but Pendergrass -- with a competent but inferior backing band -- presumably laid this stuff down near the tail end of his career. The singer's voice is not in ideal condition. The energy level on the likes of "Only You" and the other uptempo material is deficient, and the sound quality does not compare to what came out of Sigma Sound Studios in the '70s and early '80s.
