Kanklės (Traditional Lithuanian plucked psaltery)

Beschreibung

Oldest instrument of Lithuania, it is made of a special tree in a trapezoid shape, it has a metalbar and wooden pegs at each side were 5 to 12 strings are strung.

Anmerkung

Variations are as follows:

* North-eastern Aukštaitians: Being the most ancient form it is simply carved of a single piece of wood.
* Western Aukštaitians and Samogitians: Larger than the oldest, it has between eight and twelve strings and sometimes has a stylized carved bird or fish tail.
* North-western Samogitians and Suvalkians: The version folk concert kanklės are based on, it is the most decorated with carved spiral ornaments.
