Tragedy Rocks
~ Release group by The Crimea
Annotation
I can't confirm this yet but Q Magazine Issue 233 has a review of this album which states "... Davey MacManus promptly found himself and his richy layered songs signed by Warners sic. They ordered a re-recording on a decent budget..." which would indicate that the early versions of this album are one set of recordings, and the later ones are different. How they are different I am unsure yet, but there might be some work needed here with someone who has the original who can compare with the versions on streaming platforms (which appears to be the Warner re-recording mentioned in the review).
---
I left the original annotation above to help people understand my explanation. There are, in fact, three distinct versions of Tragedy Rocks. The first is the original self-released version, which is the one listed here with catalog number CDC001. It was re-recorded for the Warners release, originally released in the UK with ten tracks. The two versions listed below with 10 tracks are different formats for the UK release. Finally, the Warners version was expanded slightly for the US release, which is the 14 track version. The tracks that overlap between the US and UK versions are identical.
There are marked differences between the self-released version and the Warner releases. The tracks were re-recorded and in some some cases include significantly different arrangements, and in one or two cases there are some lyrical differences as well. The original self-released version of the songs tend to have the drums much more prominent in the mix, and the music is more upbeat and in sharp contrast to the dark lyrics. The Warners versions tend to have less of a pop sound, and MacManus' vocals are more theatrical and show deeper feelings than the original versions.
