Edison Records in Chinese
~ Etichetta
Annotazione
"Edison Records in Chinese" was an experimental label in 1902. Walter Miller was sent to Chinatown in San Francisco, where he recorded 46 cylinders. These recordings were targeted to appeal to the Chinese-American market in the United States and to the early phonograph market in China.
Though government officials in US-based Chinese embassies had been given phonograph player/recorders and graphophones, and though discussions to arrange distribution of phonographs market in China had begun in 1889, the market for phonographic recording themselves did not begin in China until 1902-1903. That market quickly grew, with mainstream Edison Records being imported into China beginning in 1903.
Though other labels, like Columbia, had hundreds of separate Chinese-market-only releases beginning in 1903, these 46 were the only Chinese-market-only release created by Edison Records. Note, though, that though only 46 cylinders with the Edison Records in China imprint were manufactured and sold, the mainstream recordings did have their packaging printed in Chinese to appeal to that market.
